Why or Why Not? Tile Roofing

Posted on Tuesday, 8th September 2020

Tile roofing is one of the oldest types of roofing that contains a modern look. You may be uncertain about which type of roofing you are looking for but rest assured, we will put your uncertainties to rest based on our knowledge and experience on roofing.

Why Tile Roofing?

Tile roofing can be made up of either cement or clay that gives your house a classical twist. Their durability and structural integrity allows tile roofing to last 50 years if not more. Comparing this to asphalt shingles, shingles maintain a lifespan of around 15-20 years before having to get them replaced. Tiles can be customized in any patterns you would prefer however coloring will be limited due to deterioration.

A huge advantage of choosing tile roofing is that it can withstand wind, fire, and hail. Just like shingles, tiles are known to be classified as Grade A fire resistant. Due to tiles being sturdy and heavy, wind is not very effective when it comes to moving tiles around as well as hail penetrating through the tiles.

Why Not Tile Roofing?

Although tile roofing is very durable and classical, the upfront cost is a lot more expensive when it comes to installation. Depending on either clay or concrete tiles, prices can range from either $400-$700 per roofing square. That’s around three times more the cost of shingles! However, because tile roofing does not need as much maintenance as shingles, you would be saving more money in the long haul. Most of the installation costs comes from how much more difficult tile roofing is compared to shingles. The installation process may take up a few more days when it comes to a full repair. However, if you were to get a leak with tile roofing, the repair costs will be a lot more than when it comes to shingles.

Tile roofing may not be for everyone. It weighs around four times more than shingles and not all houses are built to withstand all that weight. Please consider this when choosing a roofing or else the tiles can cause cracks in the roof, leading to leakage.

Tiles can be brittle so when walking or falling branches may cause cracks in the tiles. Repairing ties in a sense can be very costly.

Is Tile Roofing For You?

Ultimately, it depends on you. Whether your house can handle the amount of weight put on top, or if you are comfortable forfeiting a large upfront payment, please know that tiles are very durable and a long time investment.
