Roof Repair and Replacement Tips

What Is Required In A Typical Roof Repair Project?

Replacing a roof can add value to a home, increase its curb appeal and simply make a home more comfortable and inviting. With that said it is encouraging to note that a roof can be professionally installed usually within 3 to 5 days or less depending on the size of the home. Whatever the case may be one thing is certain and that is that it is good to know how the roofing process works if you plan on having your roof replaced.

Repair Minor Damage On Your Roof

For example, once you have decided to replace your roof and have selected your contractor of choice as well as received your estimate and given the okay for work to begin the first step is to simply remove the existing roof. This involves removing shingles, tiles or other roofing material that currently cover your home. The next step that roofing professionals will typically take is to repair minor damage on your roof once it has been exposed. In other cases major damage may require more comprehensive work.

Ice Melt Making Its Way Under Shingles

Roofers will then go to work to install a synthetic material known as an ice dam protection (if you live where there is ice) that creates a barrier used to stop ice from building up in gutters. This is important because without ice dam protection, ice melt is not able to drain away properly. This can result in ice melt making its way under shingles or tiles and ultimately causing damage to your home. The next step a professional roofer will take is to apply asphalt paper. Once asphalt paper has been completely and properly applied roofers can then add shingles or tile or any other type of roofing material.

Working With An Experienced And Knowledgeable Roofer

When shingles are used, for example, roofers will begin at the eaves and work upward. Finally flashing will be installed around areas where leaks could become apparent such as around the chimney or a vent pipe. Most roofing projects are rounded out by the installation of a ridge vent. While each house and each roof project is unique and different, working with an experienced and knowledgeable roofer can make all the difference in terms of how your project ultimately comes out.
