How to Maintain a Roof

Many modern roofs go neglected today. However, maintaining a roof in top condition at all times is essential to protecting the structure underneath the roof and ensuring the water damage does not occur. Water damage is a serious concern that can damage walls, floors, furniture and clothing as well as other items. Maintaining a sound roofing structure is essential to saving money by avoiding water damage.

Equally of concern is the fact that water leaks can result in mold and mildew related problems in a typical residential home. This can be a costly and time-consuming problem to deal with, making proper roof maintenance and care essential and important. Here are a few simple and useful roofing tips intended to keep a roof in excellent condition through all seasons and all types of weather.

1. Wait for Good Weather to Inspect Your Roof

When inspecting a roof visually, it is best to wait for good weather to prevail.

2. Avoid Walking on Your Roof

Avoid walking on a roof and instead attempt to use a ladder to visually inspect the roof. Walking on a roof can cause considerable damage and can cause leaks in and of itself.

3. Have Roof Inspected Annually

Equally important is to consider having annual roof inspections and maintenance performed. This is an excellent way to catch roofing related problems in the earliest stages.

4. Safety Should Always be the Number 1 Priority

As an added note, safety should always be the number one priority when inspecting a roof. Falling or becoming injured when inspecting a roof is simply not an option.

One safety aspect of working around a roof is to always make certain that the ladder being used is well grounded. Always place a ladder on firm footing or solid ground. When using a ladder on soft ground it is recommended to dig a small hole and plant the base of the ladder firmly in the hole. This will prevent the ladder from moving and prevent a potential fall resulting in injury.

5. Have Any Roofing Repair Done A.S.A.P.

Finally, one of the most important aspects of any roofing repair project is to get the work done as soon as possible. Postponing or delaying roofing repairs can result in serious water damage and costly repair and replacement related expenses.
