Essential Roofing Safety Tips Worth Considering

Posted on Tuesday, 2nd September 2014

Working on a roof can be a dangerous and even life-threatening proposition for those that do not have the experience and expertise required. With that said, one of the best ways to have a roofing project completed safely and correctly is to simply hire an experienced and knowledgeable roofing contractor. Those that insist on doing the work on their own should know a few important roofing safety tips that can prevent injury and save lives.

Tip 1. Get Help

For example, never work on a roof alone. This is a sure way to become seriously injured and find it difficult or impossible to get help. If an accident occurs, it is essential to have somebody nearby that can assist.

Tip 2. Make Sure Ladder is Level

With regard to the ladder, always ensure that a ladder is on a level and solid surface. Always avoid placing the ladder’s legs in the grass or a dirt surface. The best safety method when using a ladder to gain access to a roof is to have a second person standing at the base of the ladder holding it firmly.

Tip 3. Avoid Walking on Roof When Wet or Slippery

Another important concern with regard to roofing safety is to always avoid walking on a roof when it is wet or slippery. This is a sure way to take a tumble and end up back on the ground without the use of the ladder. Play it safe and only gain access to a roof when it is dry and free of any substances that may cause a slip or fall.

As an added note, leaves and especially wet leaves can set the perfect conditions for a slip and fall. Consider all hazards when venturing to the top of any roof.

Tip 4. Wear Proper Shoes

Shoes can play a big role in keeping everyone safe when working on a roof. Buying professional contractor shoes that offer good traction and greatly reduce slippage is an important consideration that must be taken into account.

Tip 5. Wear Safety Gear

In addition, safety glasses and a hardhat are another important type of safety gear that can go a long way keeping everyone safe when working on any type of roof.

Tip 6. Take Note of Weather Conditions

Finally, it is important to take note of the current weather conditions prior to venturing onto a roof. If storms are in the area and lightning is present this is a good time to stay indoors.
