Essential Kitchen Remodeling Safety Tips

Posted on Friday, 31st October 2014

One of the most popular areas of the home to be remodeled is typically the kitchen. However, as popular as this room is with regard to remodeling, there are still some important safety tips that must always be considered as a way to keep everyone safe.

1. Safely Store Cleaning Supplies and Hazardous Chemicals

For example, kids can easily become injured in a remodeling project environment that involves the kitchen. Cleaning supplies, cleaning chemicals and other toxic materials should be carefully placed during a remodeling project to avoid any encounter with children. Equally important is to ensure that other hazardous items such as medicines and pesticides are not accessible to children during a remodeling project.

2. Clean Up Spills Immediately

Slip and fall accidents are very common in kitchens especially when a remodeling project is underway. By cleaning up spills immediately and exercising extreme caution when standing on a stepping stool or ladder, the chances of a slip and fall accident are greatly reduced.

3. Keep Pets Out

In addition, keeping pets out of the kitchen during remodeling project can also serve to increase overall safety.

4. Take Precautions Prior To Plugging In Any Electrical Equipment

Another major concern when it comes to remodeling a kitchen is that of potential shock hazards. When working around water in a kitchen or bathroom, it is vital to exercise all safety precautions when plugging in electrical tools, electrical power equipment and electrical appliances. If there is standing water present, it is important to address that situation prior to plugging in any electrical equipment. During a remodeling project, an electrical contractor may be required to correctly install electrical components and outlets. Any time a homeowner is not sure with regard to electrical wiring or outlets it is best to contact an experienced contractor.

5. Exercise Extreme Caution When Cooking

Finally, fire is a common hazard that must be addressed especially in a kitchen environment when a remodeling project is being performed. For example, trying to cook in a kitchen that is partially completed can easily increase the chances of a fire. Homeowners should exercise extreme caution when cooking or working in a kitchen that is involved in a remodeling project. Have a fire extinguisher handy and have available the telephone number of the local fire department.
