Tips For Protecting A Residential Roof

Homeowners have many options when it comes to protecting a roof over the long term.

1. Never Paint Your Roof

For example, one of the best ways to avoid causing damage to a residential roof is to avoid ever painting the roof. Even if shingles or tiles begin to look old and worn, it is never recommended to paint a roof. The better option is to simply replace the roof with a new and more reliable roofing product. In short, painting a roof is a sure way to cause a roof to fail and cause extensive water damage. Alterations and enhancements to a roof is a sure way to ask for trouble when it comes to roofing related problems.

2. Inspect The Roof During High Wind Conditions

As a general rule, if a shingle roof is greater than 10 years old, it is best to inspect the roof during high wind conditions or a windstorm. If there is an indication that shingles are lifting up or becoming separated from the roof it may be time to consider replacing the roof or at least having a professional roofing contractor inspection performed.

3. Hire A Professional Roofing Contractor For Repair Work

Another common sense tip when it comes to maintaining a residential roof is to always opt for having a professional roofing contractor do any kind of repair related work or maintenance. This is essential to ensuring that repairs are done correctly the first time. Poorly performed repairs can result in leaks and water damage throughout a home. This can cost homeowners tens of thousands of dollars over the long-term.

4. Avoid Having Downspouts Pour Onto Lower Roof Sections

As an added note, it is important to avoid having downspouts from an upper roof section pour onto a lower roof section. This can result in damage to the lower roof section and will ultimately require replacement at some point.

5. Have Gutters Inspected Annually

Gutter systems are an integral part of any roof and that is why it’s so important to ensure that all gutters are operating correctly and that water flows freely. Defective or malfunctioning gutters have been responsible for many roofing related problems over the years. Having gutters inspected annually along with a roof inspection is often the best way to prevent roofing related problems.
